Information on the most recent iOS 16 update, what’s new in the next version, problems, bugs, new features, and compatibility.
Following months of beta testing, Apple made iOS 16 available for installation on iPhones on September 12, 2022, followed by iPadOS 16.1 on October 24, 2022, after announcing its big yearly operating system update in its WWDC keynote on June 6, 2022. While Apple released a slew of new features in September, and even more in the months that followed, there is still more to come as the company works on iOS 16.
We’ll go over everything you need to know about iOS 16 and how it’ll influence your iPhone and iPad experience if you haven’t already upgraded, including new features, design changes, and information on any faults and defects users are encountering with the new software.
We’ll also tell you what the most recent version of iOS 16 is and what new features it includes. And we’ll reveal which features will be included in the next iOS 16 update.
March 28, 2023 Update: iOS 16.4 is currently available for download. It contains new emoji, call improvements, and security updates.
IOS 16: THE MOST RECENT VERSION
iOS 16.4 is the most recent version of iOS 16, and it includes the following features:
- Support for Apple Music Classical: Apple Music Classical is now available as an app (downloadable from the App Store). To use it, you’ll need an Apple Music subscription.
- Home architecture update: A Home architecture update was briefly available in iOS 16.2 before Apple pulled it due to sharing issues. The functionality has returned in iOS 16.4 and is expected to make the Home architecture “faster and more reliable.”
- New emoji: iOS 16.4 includes a shaky face (to indicate “no”), left and right pushing hands, several new animals (moose, goose, jellyfish), additional food items, new musical instruments, and new heart colours.
- Web push notifications are supported: Web apps saved to the Home screen will be able to receive live updates (if users grant permission).
- Changes for Beta testers: Testers can now choose whether to receive no beta updates, Developer Beta updates (if applicable), or Public Beta updates by going to Settings > General > Software Updates. Furthermore, in order to prevent beta testers from loading beta versions via third-party sites and profiles, Apple will require an Apple ID that is registered for the beta programme. This can be a separate Apple ID that is only used for beta access.
- Upgrade of the Podcasts App: The Podcasts app has been upgraded with an enhanced Up Next queue, as well as features like episode filtering and season browsing.
- 5G: Independent support for the U.S. Users of T-Mobile should enable faster speeds where possible.
- Widgets: New Wallet widget for easy order tracking.
- Books page turning animation: The corner of the page folds up to represent page turning—this was removed from Apple Books in iOS 16.
- Mastadon support: Automatic previews of Mastadon links will be available in Messages.
- Updates and fixes for security: iOS 16.4 includes over 30 security updates.
Prior to iOS 16.4, iOS 16.3.1 was released on February 13th, bringing bug fixes and critical security updates. The update also improves iPhone 14 Crash Detection, Siri requests for Find My, and iCloud settings. (An iPadOS 16.3.1 update is also available).
IOS 16: BUGS AND ISSUES, KNOWN AND RESOLVED ISSUES
The following issues have been raised since the release of iOS 16:
- An iOS 16 Mail bug was able to lock users out of their Mail accounts and cause an endless loop of app crashes. VPN Tracker discovered that sending an email with double quotes causes Mail on iOS 16 to crash repeatedly. iOS 16.0.3 FIXED
- There have also been reports from iPhone 14 users that the Camera app is slow to launch. IN iOS 16.0.3, THIS WAS FIXED
- Incoming calls and app notifications were not displayed for some users. IN iOS 16.0.3, THIS WAS FIXED
- There was an early issue with CarPlay’s low microphone volume. IN iOS 16.0.3, THIS WAS FIXED

- Many users had difficulty connecting to Wi-Fi. In our experience, restarting the iPhone usually allowed it to reconnect to Wi-Fi and install the update. Otherwise, an update can be installed via cellular connection. Any subsequent Wi-Fi issues may be the result of settings changes, so check to see if your iPhone is set to connect automatically to your WiFi network, for example, more ideas here: How to Stop an iPhone Dropping Wi-Fi Connection. IMPLEMENTED IN iOS 16.1.1
- After updates, some notes will no longer sync with iCloud. FIXED IN APPLE IOS 16.2
- Some users have encountered battery depletion and other typical concerns, as is generally the case with a new operating system upgrade; however, these issues are usually transient and linked to data re-indexing.
- Apple published a support document near the end of September 2022 warning that activating the new iPhone keyboard vibration feature could deplete battery life. According to Apple, “enabling keyboard haptics may reduce the battery life of your iPhone.”
- In December, iPhone users began to report seeing horizontal lines when their iPhone 14 Pro Max turned on. According to reports, Apple has stated that the problem is with software rather than hardware. IN iOS 16.3, THIS WAS FIXED.
- On the Lock Screen, the wallpaper may appear black. IN iOS 16.3, THIS WAS FIXED.
- On shared boards, freeform strokes do not appear. IN iOS 16.3, THIS WAS FIXED.

- There is a possibility that Siri will not properly respond to music requests. IN iOS 16.3, THIS WAS FIXED.
- Siri requests in CarPlay may not be correctly understood. IN iOS 16.3, THIS WAS FIXED.
- Bugs in Messages and Photos that could make iOS vulnerable. IN iOS 16.3, THIS WAS FIXED.
MISCELLANEOUS CHANGES AND NEW FEATURES
These are the centerpieces of iOS 16’s new feature set, but Apple has many more minor adjustments that you’ll find after downloading the operating system in the autumn. Some may merely minimally enhance your daily life, while others will contain hidden importance.
A change in the presentation of firmware information, for example, may enable manual AirPods upgrades for the first time. Another new feature is the option to validate your device and account in the background, bypassing CAPTCHAs.
